If you want to meet someone, and are fearful that it might be shuffled off the calendar due to the busy-ness of that person, then make the meeting urgent and important. Book the meeting for only a few days into the future. Ask their PA, "Will there be a chance the his/her previous appointment might run over time? I don't want to inconvenience him/her because they miss out on our meeting. I'd feel terrible if he/she lost the opportunity because of another over-running meeting."
It is much easier to bond with someone if you both share the same lingo and cultural distinctions. To allow someone to bond with you more easily, you should take responisbility for learning their lingo and cultural distinctions.
Offer to give away a gift or service in exchange for some assistance. Often the proposed gift will not be accepted anyway.
If they don't accept your gift, infer that you still "owe" them a favour.
When they look to "cash in" on their favour, do whatever they ask. You aim is to demonstrate the tremendous value you can offer to them through your mutual favour swapping. You are building a Thread to your relationship.
70% of jobs are never advertised - but are given to people because of who they know.

YEO have some notion of "special partnerships" with its strategic alliances.
I wonder if this affects its perspective of selling it its membership base.

"Excuse me, if you saw a stranger you wanted to start a conversation with, how would you approach them?"
Then I'd take their reply, pause a second, look them in the eye and repeat it with a big smile.

Crazy crazy crazy....."Ice-breakers"
I call them snap-shot conversations
The one rule is: Offer a life giving statement (for example: Nice hair-do, Nice belt buckle etc.) get the point?
Because people do not care about what you know, until they know how much you care. The conversation must lead to "what do you do for a Living?".
Most people respond some will react.

If I'm promoting my business, I would probably not launch into a conversation with a stranger about my business. For one thing, it makes them feel like you're being impersonal and it makes them feel like a number.
The other thing is that...you don't WANT everyone in your business. What if they're a jerk? I like just striking up a conversation with them and finding out something about them. If the conversation goes well, I'll ask for their card or ask what they do.
Now, I don't have a problem just talking to people about product. Yesterday, I talked to a half-dozen people by simply saying "hi" and then saying, "Hey, let me ask you something"...then I direct their attention to a photocopy in my hand of a scientific study listing various health issues and how our product performed in a clinical trial. Then I'll say, "Do you know anyone that has a problem with any of this stuff?"
Yesterday, everyone I talked to was interested in hearing about the juice and how it works.
Overall, I think we should approach people as PEOPLE...so I wouldn't try to hit them with a "Would you like to make money from home?" kind of thing. Although I'm sure that works for some personalities.
